Painting from Photographs
Photographs provide a wealth of information as references for our paintings, but often much of it is extraneous to the story we want to tell with the painting. The challenge, then, is to extract the useful material and reject that which doesn’t contribute to the story. In fact many times the photograph may contain several good paintings if we just know how to extract them. Conversely, many times a photo may contain objects that are good reference material, but there isn’t enough to make a complete painting (that interesting building that sits in a treeless, flat landscape). This class will focus on learning how to make the most of your photo references by simplifying, rearranging and combining reference materials to produce winning paintings.

Working under the guidance of a professional portrait artist, beginners will complete at least one and possibly two paintings in this class. Intermediate students will receive guidance while they work on projects of their own choice. Recommended that students should bring basic oil paint set (or use the Arts Castle Basic Supplies). Students have several options regarding subject matter. If already working on something, student can continue work on that painting. Still life will not be set up but students are welcome to bring a photograph to work from. If you prefer to bring your own painting supplies, please contact the office for supply list.
