May 2, 2020Written by WAAL Webmaster

Happy May!

Hope everyone is staying safe out there.

Here are a few announcements. Next planned announcement will be on or about May 22 unless something exciting pops up.

——————————————————

>>>> Note from the president:

It seems like we may be staying at home longer than we hoped.  The Griswold remains closed and meetings of more than ten people are currently prohibited (and not a good idea anyway.)

We usually have a dinner in May to award scholarships to art students nominated by the teachers of the three Worthington high schools.  This year we won’t be having dinner together but I am hoping we might have an online Zoom meeting to show work from the scholarship students.  It depends on whether the students have access to their work and can get it photographed and submitted in time.

Many of you have tried online Zoom meetings in the past few months and I hope you have found them easy to use.  If we have a Zoom meeting this month, we will send an email with the login information.

We would love to see whatever art pieces you have been creating during your captivity.  Post them to www.Facebook.com/WorthingtonAreaArtLeague

>>Event Changes:

The May 14th WAAL scholarship dinner is cancelled.  Instead, we will offer an online meeting using Zoom.  We have asked the art teachers at the three Worthington High Schools to nominate their scholarship recipients and have them send us photos of their pieces.  We plan to award the scholarships by mail and to show the images during the 5/14 Zoom meeting.

>>>Venues

Work that is currently hanging in any of WAAL’s business venues will remain in place through June.  Thank you to Janet Bigley who has work hanging at Call Insurance, Quest, Worthington Dental, and Central Park Apartments.  She has graciously allowed her pieces to be displayed through the entire stay-at-home period and through the end of June.  Thanks, Janet for making this easy for everyone and I hope we can actually get out to see your work.

This means that most of our venues will need pieces starting for the July/August time frame.  Use the new online venue booking we page to sign up for July/August.

Venue sign-up is now done on line and is a quick process at WorthingtonAreaArtLeague.com.  Go to the “Membership” tab and click on Venue Booking.  Log in, using the password: artinview2020  Scroll through the venues and click on the Sign Up button.

>>>> Creatively Staying at Home

I Hope You Are Doing All Right

How are you doing in this crazy stay-at-home situation?
It takes some kind of effort to stay positive and keep creative during a pandemic, but that’s exactly what I try to do. I hope this email finds you well and in good spirits.

Thank Goodnes for Great News

exciting news image
I am very excited about some wonderful things that have happened to me in the last few weeks.
One big news is that I’ve been selected as one of the six Columbus artists featured by the Columbus ArpPop Street Gallery in 2020. My painting “It’ll Be Great” will be seen on a billboard, at the airport, and on newsstands around Columbus for about a year. How COOL is that??
The Billboard image will be exactly like the heading above, but HUGE. I am so very excited about this!

AND, the acceptance in this project, comes with a check for $500 from GCAC. My kids could not believe it either. “Wait…. they pay you to advertise your art on a billboard?”. I know, right?

Me in the studio, working on a new painting.
I’m busy creating a new body of work, getting ready for my solo show at Marcia Evans Gallery, schedule for October 2020.
I hope we can all get together by then.
I feel like the opening reception should be about art but also about hugs!
We’ll all be needing some extra hugs after this isolation is over. And I loooove hugs. 🙂

Staying Home Is Way Better Than I Thought

I have to say, after four weeks of staying at home I realized that I am way more an introvert than I have ever admitted to myself. The last time I left the house was on March 13, to move my son out of his OSU dorm, and I’m ok with that.
I am actually enjoying the time at home. It might sound crazy, but I have no commitments that make me run from one place to another, I can schedule my day and know that little will interfere, and I have my three favorite people under the same roof.
We are blessed that my husband’s income has not been affected by the crisis, and that is huge. Many people don’t have that security, unfortunately. We are very grateful.

My Ways of Keeping Busy

Cooking definitely keeps me busy. Four mouths, all at home for all meals. Ah, the possibilities! 🙂  The fact that they love every single thing I cook like it’s the best gourmet cuisine ever gets me very inspired to get creative in the kitchen.

Reading  – I have discovered the amazing collection of audiobooks from the Columbus library, and I am listening to books while I cook, paint, or do other things.

Painting of course! I try to do it as often as I can.

Gardening is another great pleasure of mine, but only if the weather is warm and dry. We had a few of such days so far, and the backyard is looking great.

Board Games, one of the perks of being locked up with three of my favorite humans: we all love board games, and our basement comes well-equipped 🙂 To mention a few favorites: UNO, Phase 10, Balderdash, Agricola, and the long but fun Mage Knights.

Updating my website is taking up a bunch of my time, but I’m so glad that I am finally getting to it. I have lots of available paintings, big and tiny, and I’m working on taking photos and posting them on the website. So far I have updated my Mixed Media portfolio, and my Oil Paintings. I have also created a couple of new portfolios for Small Unframed Work, and Acrylic Paintings. But I have several more paintings to catalog.

Writing new online articles with painting tutorials has been on my list forever, and I finally published a new one this month. It’s about mixing neutral colors, and I have two more in the works. Yay me!

Social Media I wish it took me less time, but social media keeps me quite busy. Not only I have my art facebook page and my Instagram accounts, I’m also the Communication Chair (and Interim VP) for the Dublin Area Art League, and that adds a lot of social media commitments to my day. But since I do love to connect to other artists and art lovers, overall it’s time well spent.

What Are You Up To?

I hope you are keeping busy and you are healthy and safe. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.
You can reply to this email and keep in touch that way.

Can you help with my social media presence?
If you are on facebook and have some time, please consider writing a review for my art page. Unless you are not really a fan of what I do, in that case, well, never mind the review. 😉

Write me a fb review
If you got this far down, thank you so much!!!
Blessings to you and your family.

SHARE: SHOW US YOUR MOST INSPIRING ARTWORK!
The Ohio Arts Council knows that creating community in this time of physical distancing is more important than ever. After all, artists help us all process the world as it changes around us.

That’s why we are launching a new project called the Ohio Arts Beacon of Light, to give Ohio artists a place to share, connect, and cope with the challenges presented by the coronavirus. We hope to inspire your fellow artists and the public at large through sharing your work, while giving our creative community a platform for connection, expression, and encouragement.

We invite artists of all ages, working in all disciplines, to submit their work through the Ohio Arts Beacon. You could be our next featured artist!

These are hard times, and we are facing many unknowns. We know that for some of you, this may not be the time to share your work. But, for those who are able to get into the studio and create—or, if you’re fortunate enough to work on your art from home—the world needs your voice and talent more than ever. Please help us show that, like a beacon illuminating the darkness, the arts inspire hope and guide the way forward.

THE END
Well, not sure how this will all render as people are sending things that are more complex than “plain text” with attachments or links to websites containing the announcement…I simply cut and paste this stuff. We shall see.

zero (0) attachments but . . . only the internet knows for sure.
